  1. I am glad I returned to blogging in time to read your last newsletter even though I know you will continue writing in the blog. I was especially interested in your Red Square commentary. I visited it over thirty years ago in the old Soviet Union days. In those days you could access the Kremlin from the square and the GUM store was certainly not the upmarket shopping centre it seems to be to-day though it was interesting to visit – the tallied up your purchased on an abacus (shows my age, lol). You didn’t mention if Lenin is still on view (I think he is) or if you went to see him. I assume that today you can walk anywhere you like in the square. When I visited you had to walk on clearly defined paths within the square .. if you didn’t security guards blew their whistles until you complied. Naturally, we deliberately crossed the line to get a reaction from the guards! Harbin remains on my bucket list.
