A beery good drink at 35,000ft

You might recall that we mentioned briefly in our post on gorgeous airline food (read here) that one’s sense of taste appears to be ‘dumbed’ down from the altitude (and perhaps attitude) and also the high decibel sound in the cabin.

And you might also have read that, when flying try to avoid drinking alcholic beverages.

What if the airline you were flying with tells you they have brewed a fine draft that has been crafted to taste its best at 35,000 feet in the air? The daily mail’s article tells that this is being served to first and business class passengers for selected flights between March and April. So by now, this offer is over…

But today the point of our post is not how to have a beery good drink 10km up in the atmosphere.

There is much debate about the affects of alcohol on the health of passengers when flying. Some cited research suggests that with low air pressure from the altitude, our blood is effectived thinned. This is said to accentuate the affects of alcohol. Others disagreeing, believe that the air with lower oxygen level leaves less of this vital element in your brain leading to intoxication. Either way, perhaps this might explain why people get inebriated and exhibit anti social behavior when flying?

A spate of incidents on planes in the last 12 months had prompted some airports to even consider banning alcohol not just on planes but also in the terminal itself! We had wrote previously about badly behaved passengers.

We have a tipple or two when we fly. Is a drink while flying ok? What do you think?

  1. I agree with most people here. A drink is sometimes nice with a meal and helps to soothe any nerves about flying, or aids with sleeping. However, the free alcohol on intercontinental flights means people go overboard because it is free. They risk dehydration from too much alcohol and flying exacerbates this, so that it might actually increase their risk of developing a DVT post long haul flight. Be sensible, people.

  2. one think I don’t mind is to have a glass of wine with my meal when I go overseas.Especially because it is already included in the ticket. You know that if you travel with Air Canada ( in Canada) you have to buy your beer or wine … You also have to buy your food if you want to eat. The only thing that is free is water !! I guess all of it to avoid to rise the price of tickets that are already high enough .

    1. Yeah, its the same in Europe and the US we think where for “domestic” flights there isn’t any in the way of in-flight dining unless one pays for it. In fact, its strange for us to even pay for checked bags!

      1. The main reason I don’t drink alcohol on flights – having to climb over people to use the restroom…

        I prefer to have a drink on the shorter flights, mainly to calm my nerves and curb my excitement 🙂

    1. Heheh…ironically it would probably be -51C outside the plane (or so we read from the video screens). But invariably the beer from the cans that are served are not ice cold…sigh


  3. It’s the only way you will get me on a plane. Not a lot, just a couple to settle the nerves is all I need. I also try and balance it out with water. But not everyone has the willpower to stop after a couple and they are the people who spoil it for the rest of us isn’t it?
