Some posts ago, we shared how it would be a hard sell to enjoy luxurious Maldives without spending big bucks. Mention this destination and the images of bungalows over water (be careful) most likely spring into your mind.
Well, we take it back.
Further research has led us to conclude that you can possibly enjoy the same one week (6 nights) journey at an amazing budget of under S$2000 per couple.
Tiger Airways offer non-stop direct return flights from Singapore to Male for under S$400pp including tax. And that’s if you book the flexi ticket. It can get under S$300pp for those traveling light – ie just a small bag! No check in luggage. Only thing is that they operate 3x per week. but that should be enough!
Now if you are not into seaplane flying from Male to ‘your’ island resort, then just within an hour’s speedboat ride is a plethora of choices for resorts. Now prices for resorts remain in the S$200-500/night range, so not exactly budget. But Airbnb is now an option, and you can also easily find rooms from privately run guesthouses. We checked out Guesthouses in the Maldives (as recommended by the nomad) and found some fantastic offers that go as low as US$90/night without activities. And if you add in activities, it goes for just US130/night, full board! And for two!
Again if you read the nomad (Matt), then you will hear of his talk about taking the ferries (it is just US$3pp getting to the guesthouse in the example cited above) to reach exotically located yet cheaper alternatives. Dining on the cheap etc. And yes the snorkels and views of the ocean will be similarly fabulous. Our opinion – that’s not exactly the way to a carefree journey unless you have plenty of time. Hey sure it’s an option.
Now that you are empowered with knowledge, it is time to use it.
